Around 10 km south of Mainpuri city, in the Agra division, lies Bhanwat village, which offers a serene escape into the rustic charm of Uttar Pradesh. Bhanwat is especially known for preserving the intricate decorative craft of Tarkashi. It is a traditional form of metal inlay, typically done using brass on Sheesham wood. Local artisans skilfully craft these masterpieces, reflecting a rich cultural heritage passed down through generations.
The work is slow and highly skilled, requiring a steady hand and years of practice. Every piece carries the unique imprint of the artisan who made it. The skilled artisans of the village carve intricate designs directly onto the wooden surface and then insert flat strips of brass in it. The surface is then polished, bringing out the contrast between metal and wood, forming a single, smooth surface of an exquisite design of distinct geometric or floral pattern.
The final products include trays, jewellery boxes, panels, name plaques, lamps, tables and other household or decorative items. Each piece reflects hours of detailed craftsmanship and is usually made in small home-based workshops, using manual tools and traditional methods. Bhanwat remains one of the few places where the art of Tarkashi is still practiced in its original unmechanised form. Visitors can observe artisans at work, gaining insight into their meticulous techniques.

By Air: The closest airport is in Agra (approx. 150 km), followed by Kanpur Airport (approx. 190 km).
